In the UNESCO World Heritage designated town of Luang Prabang there are over 30 temples along with religious and historical monuments. Luang Prabang has especially strong ties with Buddhism, being a traditional destination for novices and students of the faith. The town itself is named after the large golden Buddha, the Prabang, centrepiece of the Royal Palace Museum. The largest and most richly decorated of all Luang Prabang temples, its full title is Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham and has intricate carved designs, in black lacquer and gold leaf, depicting the penultimate reincarnation of Buddha. Located near the Royal Palace Museum, it was built at the turn of the 18th century and has been restored and extended since then. The sacred Emerald Buddha statue sits inside the red and gold interior and the Prabang is brought to the temple at New Year (in April) for three days, encouraging an influx of pilgrims to the wat. There were major restorations in 1943 and 1962, as well as in more recent times.

This Buddha statue was placed just behind the great Buddha altar. The buddha hand position symbolizes protection, peace, blessing and the dispelling of fear.

Luang Prabang heeft tientallen tempels, fraaie frans-indochinese architectuur, een museum, een schitterende natuur, een verfijnde keuken en het meest belangrijke Boeddhabeeld van Laos. Terecht is Luang Prabang door de Unesco op de werelderfgoedlijst van de belangrijkste cultuurgoederen van de wereld geplaatst.
De langs Xiang Thong gelegen Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham, of Wat Mai, is in de late 18de eeuw gebouwd. De Wat Mai dateert uit 1796. Deze tempel was de residentie van de hoofdabt van Laos. De houten kapel met het vijfvoudige dak is exemplarisch voor de architectuurstijl van Luang Prabang. Het heilige smaragdgroene Boedha zit in deze rood met goud beklede kapel. Met nieuwjaar wordt de Prabang gebracht naar deze tempel (in April) drie dagen. Zo wordt deze mooie tempel in het licht gezet en daardoor door veel pelgrims bezocht. Er waren belangrijke restauraties in 1943 en 1962, evenals in recentere tijden.
